Daniel J. Gleason is Senior Of Counsel in the Litigation Department. With over four decades of experience, Dan’s trial practice focuses on civil litigation typically as lead trial counsel and addresses broad and variegated areas of high stakes business litigation, including intellectual property disputes (principally in patent, copyright and trademark cases); non-competition obligations; business torts; partnership dissolutions; class actions encompassing complex securities and insurance cases; defense of media in First Amendment lawsuits; defense of Superfund litigation and accompanying environmental insurance coverage claims; civil rights, voting rights and other class actions; and product liability defense. While primarily focusing on trial law, Dan also has substantial appellate experience, both at federal and state court levels.

An experienced arbitrator, Dan has served on commercial panels and represented litigants in business arbitrations. He also serves as a mediator, particularly for complex tort and commercial matters. Dan has taught, lectured and written on many issues relating to substantive and trial law, including trial techniques and jury trials.

Given the breadth of his courtroom experience and depth of jury trial roles, Dan has been widely recognized among his peers, including as an elected Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. The U.K. published Chambers and Partners has ranked him among the leading U.S. Litigation attorneys in the 2007-2015 editions of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business; he has been selected for inclusion in the 2004-2014 editions of Massachusetts Super Lawyers; and he was selected for The Best Lawyers in America for 20 years.

Dan received his J.D. degree cum laude from Harvard Law School, and his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard College where he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Nutter has a distinguished pedigree, being the firm founded by Louis D. Brandeis, who later was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and Samuel D. Warren. The two opened their practice in 1879 and the firm was soon successful, arguing cases before the Supreme Court, handling international patent filings and representing some of the major industries that were burgeoning in New England. The founding partners’ rich legacy continues to inspire and set an example for the firm. Today Nutter upholds the same standard of focused dedication, innovation and unwavering commitment that they set over a century ago
