Clifford J. Hendel has been a partner in the Madrid firm of Araoz & Rueda since 1997.

Born and educated in the United States, he is a dual US-French citizen. He is admitted to practice in New York (1985), England and Wales (1995), Paris (1996) and Madrid (2000), and thus is simultaneously an attorney, solicitor, avocat à la cour and abogado.

Before joining Araoz & Rueda, he was a corporate associate and later Of Counsel in the New York and Paris offices of a leading global law firm. He started his legal career as judicial law clerk in the United States Court for the District of Connecticut, after obtaining a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law (Cum Laude) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University (Magna Cum Laude). LLM in Global Sports Law from Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE).

In the area of international and domestic arbitration, he has acted as counsel, sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator and Chair in numerous arbitral proceedings, both ad hoc and administered by institutions such as The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), The London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and La Corte de Arbitraje de la Cámara de Comercio e Industria de Madrid (CAM).

A member of the ICC Comission on Arbitration and ADR, he is included in the ICC’s US and French national lists of arbitrators and has been appointed by the ICC as sole arbitrator, Chair and co-arbitrator in matters involving a variety of applicable laws, particularly Spanish and French law.

Mr. Hendel has frequently served as an arbitrator in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition in Vienna and in preparatory competitions in Madrid, as well as in similar Spanish language competitions. He has been an adjunct professor of law at Madrid’s Instituto de Empresa, teaching International Contracts in its international LLM, and has lectured on international arbitration in the context of international M&A and project finance transactions at Madrid’s Universidad de Alcalá de Henares and on sports arbitration at Madrid’s Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.

We act as counsel in all types of national and international arbitration procedures relating to companies and corporate and commercial contracting, both “ad hoc” proceedings as well as those administered by arbitral institutions.

We have broad experience in arbitral proceedings administered both by the main Spanish arbitral institutions: Corte Civil y Mercantil de Arbitraje (CIMA), Tribunal Arbitral de Barcelona (TAB) and Corte de Arbitraje de la Cámara de Comercio e Industria de Madrid (CAM), and by international institutions, including International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), American Arbitration Association (AAA), Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), offering our clients extensive experience in complex arbitrations in a wide variety of sectors.

We also act regularly as sole arbitrators, Chairs or co-arbitrators in arbitral proceedings under the auspices of the ICC, the LCIA, the CAS and the CAM, as well as mediators in mediation proceedings administered both by Spanish mediation institutions: Centro de Mediación y Solución de Conflictos (CEMED) and by international institutions, including International Institute for Conflict, Prevention & Resolution (CPR) and Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR).
