Clifford J. Hendel is the founding partner of HENDEL IDR, a Madrid firm providing a broad range of international dispute resolution services (acting as arbitrator, mediator, counsel, consultant and expert).

Born and educated in the United States, he is a dual US-France national, admitted to practice in New York (1985), England and Wales (1995), Paris (1996) and Madrid (2000), and thus is simultaneously an attorney, solicitor, avocat à la cour and abogado.

He started his legal career as judicial law clerk in the United States Court for the District of Connecticut, after obtaining a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law (Cum Laude) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University (Magna Cum Laude). He has a masters in Global Sports Law from Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE).

After his clerkship, he was for a decade a corporate associate and later Of Counsel in the New York and Paris offices of a leading global law firm. For the next two decades, he was partner of a leading Spanish boutique firm, based in Madrid, practicing principally in the area of international transactions and international dispute resolution (as counsel, arbitrator and mediator). He has particular experience in international financial matters, international M&A and international joint ventures.

In the area of commercial and investment arbitration, he acts regularly as counsel, sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator and Chair in numerous arbitral proceedings, both ad-hoc and administered by institutions such as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the FIBA Basketball Arbitral Tribunal, and the Corte de Arbitraje de la Cámara de Comercio e Industria de Madrid (CAM).

A member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR by virtue of his membership in the Spain Committee of the ICC, he has been appointed on recommendation of the ICC’s US and French national committees as sole arbitrator, Chair and co-arbitrator in matters involving a variety of applicable laws, particularly Spanish and French law.

He is on the Arbitrators Lists of the International Center for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the Centro de Arbitragem Comercial da Câmara de Comércio e Indústria Portuguesa, the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC), the Tribunal Arbitral de Barcelona (TAB), the British Virgin Islands International Arbitration Centre (BVIIAC), the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), the Cámara Franco-Española de Comercio e Industria, the CAS and the BAT, among others.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the Global Panel of Neutrals of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR), a member of the Executive Council of the CPR’s European Advisory Board, an Accredited Mediator of the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), and a Mediator of the Centro de Solución de Conflictos of AGERS (the Asociación Española de Gerencia de Riesgos y Seguros) and of the Centro de Mediación y Solución de Conflictos (CEMED).

He is Chair of the Spain Chapter of NYSBA’s International Practice Section, a member of the Governing Board of the Club Español de Arbitraje, and a member of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Arbitraje (ALARB), NYSBA’s Latin American Council (LAC), the New York International Arbitration Center and the Advisory Board of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA). He is also a founding moderator of ITAFOR, the ITA Latin American Arbitration Forum, an online discussion group focusing on Latin American arbitration and ADR.

Mr. Hendel has frequently served as an arbitrator in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition in Vienna and in preparatory competitions in Madrid, as well as in similar Spanish language competitions. He has been an adjunct professor of law at Madrid’s Instituto de Empresa, teaching International Contracts in its international LLM, and has lectured on international arbitration in the context of international M&A and project finance transactions at Madrid’s Universidad de Alcalá de Henares and on sports arbitration at Madrid’s Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.

He has been rated as “Recommended Individual” in Arbitration in Chambers & Partners, The Legal 500 EMEA and European Legal Experts in all editions since 2000, has received special distinction as “Most in Demand Arbitrator” in Chambers & Partners Global Guide editions since 2009, has been included in the list of “Best Lawyers in Spain” of the legal directory Best Lawyers in the categories of International Arbitration, Arbitration/Mediation, Banking & Finance and Corporate/M&A in editions since 2010, and has received similar recognition from Leaders League and Who’s Who Legal.
